Collingwood writes pretty readable tales, albeit with some degree of formulaic predictability. I've read several of his novels and actually quite enjoyed them all.Readers can expect a fair amount of description of boats and sailing, de rigeur. There is a fairly miraculous rescue of a love interest (with requisite happy ending). Buried treasure figures heavily in the narrative (as in other of Collingwood's novels), esp. the ending. Rescuing the marooned father is the main motivation for a very long voyage in a small boat. Bob is a predictable old salt companion, with the obligatory heart of gold. There is a reasonable dose of mayhem with pirates and obstreperous natives, with our hero recovering from wounds under the ministrations of our heroine.
A modern-day reader has to allow for 19th century prejudices and stereotypes along the way. The eventual treasure (no real spoiler) is divied five ways, leaving out the two natives who did the dirty work of digging it up. The heroine is almost too stereotypically devoted to "the province of women," for a 17-year old.
Collingwood's prose is often stilted, particularly in dialogue (Harry's avowal of his love for Ella is a case in point; wonder she didn't gag on it), but you can't really fault him for colorful description and nautical detail.
My only real gripe is that the text was all center-justified, an irritation. The text was still readable, however.

Opened up the wonderful world of sailing and the challenge and adventure the shipboard life presented and demanded. Much greater challenge than we usually face today.
